This is my first year in a classroom, so I am hoping by incorporating technology, and using various learning styles I will be able to have a big impact on my students and their 21st century minds.
In my classroom, I currently teach students to set their own goals and take charge of their own learning. I took the Schools Attuned training and will implement many strategies that I learned in my classroom this year. I have decided that the most important aspect of my job is to teach students how to learn.
I feel that I do a better job than most at connecting. My students use a lot of technology and I offer a lot of choice. However, I do not have a regents exam at the end of the year to prepare for, so it makes it much easier for me.
I use the 8 multiple intelligences in my classroom already. I really need to use more technology because I know that my students are way ahead of me when it comes to technology. I am going to try one new technology thing in each of my classes.
Being a tech "supporter" for the entire district... I feel that the way that I launch the 21st century mind for the district is to keep our technology at the front of the curve.
I try to bring big ideas into every small skill I'm teaching. I work to find situations and take advantage of spontaneous ones to throw life skills at them. For instance reasoning, cultural differences, and world views are applicable to everyone, no matter what. Hopefully along the way they'll connect that to a little music along the way.
Having the children learn how to collaborate and work together is a big part of preparing them for the future. It's not just the skills, it's the habits and behaviors. Center time is a big part of this in my classroom.
I've been gradually working to include daily technology use in elementary classroom so my students have a base of knowledge they can use with various applications. We've had penpals in the past, but now I'm thinking of ways to incorporate technology with the penpal thing, and I love the idea of connecting to the world through blogs- surveys and such! : )
As a teacher of Global History and Geography, I am always looking for ways to connect our study of world history to what is happening in the world today. Many of the stories that comes across the wires around the world each day are rooted in the very events we cover in GLobal 9 and 10 each day. I try to make these connections on a daily basis, whenever possible. I do find it difficult at times to make some of the content in the state curriculum come alive for the students. For example, I am always looking for ideas to make the African Trading Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhai relevant to the lives of students in Bolivar and Richburg, NY. There seems to be too much emphasis on "THE REGENTS" in New York. I dream of a day when we can move away from this emphasis OR make the Regents more relevant to the world these students will inherit in the 21st century.
I am trying to be more of a facilitator every year and encourage my students to venture out on their own, while providing interesting and useful lessons incorporating latest fun technology !
My kids are on the computers every day using different software. They have a choice between a very structured learning software which requires just basic mouse skills, an internet web page ( www.starfall.com ), which requires a little more navagation skills, and some typing. A learn to type game where the letters fall and students shoot them by pressing the correct key. And finally, they are allowed to use microsoft word and write/print letters, stories, words, and sentences. I also use the internet constantly to improve vocabulary instruction. What is a platypus? Use google images to find pictures. Use media-net to find a Jeff Corwin video of him capturing one and releasing it into the wild. The students also make podcasts to practice fluency reading poems and nursery rhymes and get to hear themselves, reflect on what they can do better, and try again.
I'm excited to include technology into learning for area high schools through online course opportunities. This provides students with endless choices of curriculum!
In my classroom, I let my students have choices. For example I use a lot of non fiction text or I take their area of interest. It is reading without them thinking they are reading. If the reading is too difficult I use assistive technology to help them. I do not want to have their reading get in the way of learning something. I also use multi sensory techniques to get them learning. There is a lot of moving and shaking in my room.
I think all students need "real" experiences and connections. I try to do that in my classroom. I also love technology in all forms so try to incorporate that as much as possible. Choice is powerful too. I want my students to think and creatively solve problems. I just keep evolving....

I hope what I am teaching in my classroom will make my students more independent learners and engaged learners.

I try to allow my students to explore their interest. The world of education would be wonderful if Giselle's view were a reality.
